Build A Woodworking Bench

Woodworking is an evolutionary hobby. You start small and slowly build your tool set and skills. It doesn't take long until you realize that you need a woodworking bench. A good woodworking bench plan is one that us fully customizable.

Look for a woodworking bench plan that allows for add-ons and additional space for added tools and woodworking clamps and time goes on. Right now, a few clamps, a vice and a large work area may be fine, but you'll progress. You need a sturdy base that you can build on later.

As you can see, it's rare that you're going to find a good bench that you just buy. If you do, you're going to spend well over $500 on it. Every bench should have places for dogs(pegs) and clamps, adjustable to your height, a very hard and flat surface, and it should be rugged.

A good start is to find a plan that you can customize. I customized mine with add-ons in mind. It was very simple to start, but I overbuilt it enough so that adding later is not a problem. I even added wheels to the legs to allow me to roll the workbench around the shop. To do that, I had to change the plans from small legs, to sturdy 4x4 legs. The list of things that you can change and add is endless.

Once you build a woodworking bench, you'll have the base of knowledge to adjust the size for benches for very specific purposes, like saw tables, vice tables and layout benches
